The year ahead will be one of investment - in innovation, in collaboration, in advocacy, and in the society itself. The most immediate evidence of that investment is the creation of a new community of practice (COP), the Live Donor COP.

The Live Donor Community of Practice reflects the work of a multidisciplinary group of AST members, all intimately involved with care of the live organ donor throughout the donation continuum. This COP will work to define standards and promote best practices for the evaluation and care of live organ donors while enhancing the quality, effectiveness and integrity of the living donor process.

There have been many changes over recent years in the care of the living organ donor and it has essentially become a transplant subspecialty with a multidisciplinary team designated to the care and education of a unique population of patients. The new Live Donor COP is uniquely positioned to improve the care of the live donor and help identify standards in the evaluation/follow-up of the living donor. Over the course of the coming year, the COP will work to define best practices that will assist the transplant community in complying with regulatory requirements and the delivery of quality care to the living organ donor.

The Live Donor COP is the result of grassroot suggestions from AST members and is ready to accept members to the community of practice. Spread the word about this community of practice to fellow colleagues that are involved in caring for the live organ donor. Non members of the AST are welcome to join the community of practice for a one year trial period. After the period ends, they will be required to join the AST to continue COP participation.
