On November 17, the AST sent a letter to Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regarding strong objections to the draft "PHS Guidelines for Reducing the Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) through Solid Organ Transplantation.
AST recommends that the draft document be withdrawn and a renewed and truly collaborative effort be established to update the 1994 guidelines (PHS Guidelines for Preventing Transmission of HIV through Transplantation of Human Tissue and Organs) to more accurately reflect prudent practice and the constructive concerns we have detailed in this response.
The American Society of Transplantation is an international organization of professionals dedicated to advancing the field of transplantation and improving patient care by promoting research, education, advocacy, and organ donation.
