The AST Faculty Grant applications are submitted in one of five primary categories:
AST Basic Science Faculty Development Grant
This is a two-year grant ($40,000/year) for Junior Faculty. The goal of the AST Basic Science Faculty Development Grant is to promote the careers of young independent investigators within the first 5 years of their first faculty appointment, by providing funds allowing them to expand on preliminary research findings that will become the basis for individual research or career development awards from the NIH, VA, or equivalent agencies.
The Basic Science Faculty Development Grant is intended to support work in transplantation biology broadly ranging from pertinent basic immunology to animal studies. All types of organ, tissue, and cell transplants will be considered. The project should provide a strong training vehicle for the applicant, in keeping with the overall mission of the AST Faculty Development Grants.
AST Clinical Science Faculty Development Grant
This is a two-year grant ($40,000/year) for Junior Faculty. The goal of the AST Clinical Science Faculty Development Grant is to promote the careers of young independent investigators within the first 5 years of their first faculty appointment, by providing funds allowing them to expand on preliminary research findings that will become the basis for individual research or career development awards from the NIH, VA, or equivalent agencies.
Clinical Science Faculty Development Grants cover three main categories: Clinical Trials, Clinical Outcomes, and Translational Research that involves materials from human patients.
AST Allied Health Professionals Grant
This is a two-year grant ($40,000/year) for Allied Health Professionals awarded for studies that focus on topics related to transplant candidate and recipient outcomes and well-being, quality of life, compliance, and aspects of transplant-related drugs that affect patient care (including dosing, side effects, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacogenetics). Studies should be designed to answer specific question(s). Preference will be given to prospective studies. Note the distinct eligibility requirements compared to the other faculty grants. Applications will be considered within the general pool of AST Faculty Grants.
AST Branch Out Grant
This one year, $40,000 ($20,000 to each investigator) grant is designed to support a new collaboration between a transplant researcher who is an AST member and a basic science investigator who is neither an AST member nor a transplant researcher. This grant aims to encourage talented independent investigators (often, at junior to mid–career levels), to integrate basic science and transplantation research that will lead to future funding from the NIH, the VA or equivalent agencies. Note the distinct eligibility and application requirements for this grant. This AST Branch Out Grant is a distinct category that is not considered as part of the general pool of AST Faculty Grants.
